Panthers Roll Past the Roadrunners with 21-7 Win
The Chaffey College women's water polo team looked sharp and played with confidence in Wednesday's South Coast Conference matchup, rolling past Rio Hondo College 21–7 at the Aquatic Center. The Panthers displayed balanced scoring, crisp ball movement, and relentless defensive pressure to secure the win.
Chaffey came out firing in the first quarter, building a quick 6–0 lead before Rio Hondo found the back of the cage. Savannah Shaw opened the scoring with back-to-back goals, the first unassisted and the second assisted by Kaylee Pfalmer. Pfalmer then added a goal of her own off a pass from goalkeeper Annemarie Marcucci, followed by strikes from Ani Babayan, Elise Camarena, and Alyssa Garcia. The Panthers' counterattack and frontcourt coordination set the tone early as they closed the first quarter up 6–1.
The Panthers extended their lead in the second quarter behind strong offensive execution and disciplined spacing. Sarah Alexander found the cage twice, scoring off assists from Shaw and Pfalmer, while Babayan added a goal off another Pfalmer setup to make it 9–7 at halftime.
Chaffey's offensive rhythm continued in the third quarter, as Aubrey Castillo opened the frame with a goal assisted by Babayan. Pfalmer, Camarena, and Alexander each scored as the Panthers widened their lead to 13–7, maintaining control of tempo and possession throughout the quarter.
In the final frame, the Panthers erupted for eight goals behind sharp passing and quick transitions. Camarena and Babayan each netted two goals, while Mikaela Hernandez, Pfalmer, Marcucci, and Shaw all added to the scoring run. Marcucci and Shaw shared time in the cage, combining for 10 saves and directing a cohesive defensive unit that stopped Rio Hondo's attack.
Camarena led Chaffey with four goals and three assists, while Pfalmer and Babayan each recorded three goals. Alexander tallied two goals and two assists, and Shaw contributed two goals and a pair of steals in an all-around effort.
The win gives the Panthers added momentum as they head into the Miramar Halloween Tournament. Chaffey will travel to San Diego to face host Miramar College at 9:20 a.m. and San Diego Mesa College at 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31.
