Kayle Morris, Head Coach Women's Swim/Dive
Head Coach Kayle Morris joined the Panther family this year as the college's newest head coach, leading the women's swim/dive team. A former collegiate swimmer herself, Coach Morris brings 13 years of coaching experience to the Chaffey pool deck and was 2019 PCSC Coach of the Year.
Morris is a graduate of Concordia Irvine (NCAA DII) where she swam for the Eagles and earned her degree in exercise sport sciences with an emphasis in both coaching and rehabilitation. "I didn't always want to be a coach," said Kayle. "One of my professors convinced me to add another emphasis in coaching but I swore to him I would not use it. Now here I am coaching and he will not let me live it down."
Coach Morris' rookie season was cut short by the pandemic but on their last trip, "We made a pit stop in Solvang before our long drive home and toured around the town. Some went on a hike, others rented the big peddle bikes to ride around. And we all went to the Ostrich farm to feed them." These team bonding exercises are critical in a sport dominated by personal bests and individual races. "Being a student-athlete takes hard work and determination. I want them to grow into respectful, hard working adults. I want them to be able to come to me for anything and know I will be completely honest with them."
"Have fun," adds Morris. "College goes by fast, take everything in and give it your all and you will be just fine! Find what you are looking for in a school and go there. It is best to be comfortable in your surroundings, that will lead to a positive outcome."
The stay-at-home order has allowed Coach Morris to enjoy her new purchase. "I just bought my first house during this which is crazy but exciting. I have learned to have a schedule and stick to that and it helps." She's been trying to get outside for some fresh air and exercise and can't wait to return to the gym when the order is lifted. Kayle enjoys the beach - she's swam with manatees in Florida - Angels baseball, country music, and strawberries. "I only started in January and then COVID hit so I have only been at Chaffey a short amount of time," said Morris. "The coaches and admins are supportive to all sports! It is a welcoming school for both coaches and athletes to be a part of."
Looking forward to next season, Coach Morris sees the team growing in numbers and continuing to get best times.
