Panthers Battle Late but Fall to No. 8 Orange Coast in SoCal Regionals
The Chaffey College women's soccer team saw its postseason run come to an end on Saturday night, falling 1-0 to No. 8 Orange Coast College in the second round of the 3C2A SoCal Regionals. The match featured long stretches of disciplined defending from the Panthers, who remained organized and competitive throughout the full 90 minutes.
The Pirates applied sustained pressure early, generating 15 first-half shots, but the Panthers' defensive unit, Sofia Guerrero, Emma Guadron, Chloe Rodriguez, Tavajia Richardson, and Tegan Garcia, held firm. Their structure denied the Pirates clean looks inside the box and forced several attempts from distance. Goalkeeper Isabella Ortiz was outstanding throughout the night, recording 10 saves and controlling the box against a relentless attack.
Despite absorbing pressure, Chaffey created moments of quality in transition. Midfielder Alexa Pereida pushed the Panthers forward with three shot attempts, including a dangerous strike on frame early in the second half. Geneve Ashton and Rodriguez each added shots on goal, challenging the Pirates and giving Chaffey opportunities to break through.
The Pirates ultimately broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, converting off a combination play and finish. The Panthers responded with urgency, generating late chances off set pieces and wide buildup, but the Pirates' back line held off Chaffey's final pushes.
Throughout the match, Chaffey remained composed defensively, limiting Orange Coast to eight second-half shots after a heavy opening stretch. Ortiz's command in goal and the back line's collective discipline kept the Panthers within striking distance until the final whistle.
Saturday's result closed a competitive and resilient season for the Panthers, who finished with an overall record of 9-6-5 and 6-2-2 in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference.
