Panthers Pounce on Owls in Road Victory
The Chaffey College women's basketball team delivered a complete performance on Saturday afternoon, earning a commanding 79-56 road victory over Citrus College. The Panthers controlled the pace on both ends of the floor, using a big second-half push and balanced scoring to secure their first road win of the season.
Chaffey opened the game with active defensive pressure and efficient paint scoring, keeping the contest tight through the first quarter despite trailing 18-13. The Panthers found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, sparked by Danielle Singley and steady guard play from Niyah Thomas and Cali Azcuenaga. Chaffey outscored Citrus 17-13 in the quarter to pull within 31-30 at halftime.
The third quarter belonged entirely to the Panthers. Chaffey erupted for 27 points, its highest-scoring quarter of the afternoon, while holding the Owls to just 10. Singley and Young set the tone offensively, combining for timely scores around the rim and contributing to a decisive 22-10 run that extended the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Chaffey continued its dominance in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 more points and maintaining control defensively to close out the win. The Panthers' depth shined late, with multiple reserves contributing on the glass and in transition to secure the double-digit victory.
Singley led Chaffey with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting, adding two rebounds, one assist and a steal in 25 minutes. Young delivered one of her most efficient outings of the season, scoring 15 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 7-for-8 at the free-throw line while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists. Azcuenaga continued her strong play with eight points, four rebounds and an assist, while Thomas added four points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Chaffey's depth was a major factor, with 31 bench points highlighted by contributions from Abby Hardy (six points, three rebounds), Ahjoy Turner (six points, two rebounds), Kamryn Ellis (four points, three assists) and Alexa Castricone (four points, two rebounds). Destiney Rentie added four points and a steal, while Venezia Perez provided six points, four rebounds and three steals as a steady interior presence.
As a team, Chaffey shot 48.5 percent from the field, knocked down five threes, and dominated the rebounding battle 45-37. The Panthers also forced 26 Citrus turnovers and scored 26 points off those opportunities while producing 13 second-chance points behind 14 offensive rebounds.
The Panthers will face MiraCosta College on the road Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m.
