Softball Sweeps the Knights in Valentine's Day Doubleheader
Chaffey’s softball squad traveled to San Diego on Valentine’s Day and took a pair of games from host San Diego City College
In game one, the Panthers scored often and early, en route to a 13-0 mercy-rule victory as 11 different Chaffey batters recorded at least one hit.
Sophomore center fielder Lauren Chappell was 2-3 with 3 RBI while scoring a pair of runs. Freshman catcher Khila Estrada went 2-2 at the plate, with a single and a triple and scored two runs.
Sophomore third baseman Fernanda Cano had the big blow, a grand slam home run in the 5th inning, her 4th homer of the season.
Freshman pitcher Bryanna Ortega scattered 4 hits and struck out 2 batters for her second shutout of the season.
Game two was a much different affair, as San Diego City took advantage of a pair of Chaffey errors in the first inning and jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers closed the gap to 4-3 in the second inning as Khila Estrada and freshman outfielder Makayla Enriquez each picked up an RBI.
After the Knights added another run in the 4th inning, the score stayed 5-3 going into the 7th, with Chaffey still trailing by two. The Panthers pulled off another 2-out comeback as Enriquez scored on an error and then freshman Delilah Perez and Lauren Chappell executed a double steal, tying the game at 5-5.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Hernandez held San Diego in the bottom of the 7th and from there the Panthers broke open the game in the extra frame, plating 8 runs in the 8th inning. The biggest blow was a 2-RBI single by sophomore left fielder Rosyvette Garcia.
The Knights battled back in their bottom half of the inning but Bryanna Ortega came back in relief and ended the rally, picking up her first save in the process.
The pair of wins improved Chaffey’s record to 7-5 on the season.
