Chaffey softball hands College of the Canyons its first loss
The Panthers softball team took on College of the Canyons on January 31 in Chaffey’s home opener and emerged with a hard-fought 3-2 victory. The win moves Chaffey to 2-1 on the season.
Freshman pitcher Bryanna Ortega threw a complete-game 8-hitter, allowing just one walk, to pick up her second win of the year.
Chaffey only had 7 hits on the day, but four of them were for extra bases, providing some firepower in clutch situations. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when freshman shortstop Nevaeha Tarin drilled an RBI single, scoring freshman right fielder Makayla Enriquez, who had singled to start the rally.
With the same 1-0 score in the 4th inning, the Panthers struck again. Freshman Mia Britt hit a 2-out pinch hit double to score sophomore catcher Allison Waite, who had earlier smashed a long double of her own.
Canyons cut the lead to 2-1 with a 5th inning run, but Chaffey immediately responded. Freshman second baseman Micayla Arreola doubled to lead off the inning and sophomore Fernanda Cano laced a 2-out double to give the Panthers a 2-run lead.
Canyons added one in the 6th before Ortega closed out the 7th for the win.
