Panthers Challenged by Mounties in Physical Matchup
The Chaffey College men's basketball team continued its road stretch on Friday evening, falling 82-59 to Mt. San Antonio College in a physical matchup defined by rebounding, interior scoring, and second-chance opportunities for the Mounties. Despite competitive stretches and contributions from the full rotation, the Panthers were unable to overcome Mt. SAC's advantage on the glass and efficient scoring around the rim.
Chaffey opened the game with steady ball movement and early baskets from Brian Smith, Gozie Ejike and Jonathan Markham, but Mt. SAC established momentum through transition play and offensive rebounding. The Panthers shot 32.4 percent from the field in the first half and knocked down a pair of threes, but the Mounties' 43-26 halftime lead was fueled by 10 second-chance points and strong interior finishes.
The Panthers worked to shift the tempo in the second half, generating improved looks inside and producing 14 second-chance points of their own. Mt. SAC maintained control of the second half and protected their lead, finishing behind 45.9 percent shooting, 21 made free throws, and a 47-29 rebounding advantage.
Collin Ingram led the Panthers with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting, adding two rebounds and two steals in a strong two-way effort. Garcia followed with 10 points, five assists and three rebounds. Payne added ten points and two rebounds off the bench. Off the bench, Ejike contributed eight points on 3-for-8 shooting, two rebounds and two assists, while Christian Walton added six points and two boards.
As a team, Chaffey shot 35.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line while producing 28 bench points and 14 second-chance points. Mt. SAC countered with 21 points off turnovers, 34 points in the paint and were 47-29 in rebounds, shaping the outcome.
The Panthers will aim to bounce back when they host Oxnard College at the Sports Center on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 5 p.m.
